Our education collaborators are working on programs to implement the app in STEM classrooms and clubs for kids and teens nationally and around the world to learn about how engineering shapes our every day lives. Kids and teens in these programs will be invited to connect with engineers through the app so they can meet and interact with professionals in their fields of interest. We give back to our community

CKL is involved in giving back to the Chicago community in many ways. Most recently CKL sponsoring the 2017 sold-out Our Great Rivers workshop where stakeholder discussed their visions for Chicago’s rivers. We also annually participate in the Museum of Science and Industry - Black Creativity Showcase.

We invest in staff development

CKL provides internships and traineeships for college engineering students and provided scholarships in partnership with not-for-profit organizations for incoming freshmen majoring in STEM fields. All CKL staff are encouraged to participate fully in their community. CKL also sponsors staff certifications and training.

We invest in technology

Although small, CKL invests in the technology that allows us to work on large, challenging infrastructure projects that are not typical of a smaller company.

We support diversity in engineering

CKL was recognized by the Obama White House for our commitment to launch an initiative to increase the number of students, especially African-American students, in STEM-based education programs. In 2014, CEO Mae Whiteside was awarded the Rosa Parks Diversity Leadership Award by the Women’s Transportation Symposium Greater Chicago for her efforts to mentor high schools students throughout Chicago about careers in engineering.

This is Our Story...

Founder and CEO Mae Whiteside grew up in the public housing on Chicago’s South Side. Her family had limited access to transportation, which impacted her mother’s options for work. There was also limited access to parks or green space. As result, Mae developed a strong desire to connect people to opportunity and create a healthier environment. She pursued a career in engineering to improve her local community. After earning her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology and gaining work experience, she established CKL Engineers.
