Our education collaborators are working on programs to implement the app in STEM classrooms and clubs for kids and teens nationally and around the world to learn about how engineering shapes our every day lives. Kids and teens in these programs will be invited to connect with engineers through the app so they can meet and interact with professionals in their fields of interest. Please contact us to learn more about the program and how you can participate.

This is My Story
My name is Sophie Gillern (she/her) and I grew up in a small town north of Berkeley California. Growing up with two other sisters, we all had different interests and I immediately was very interested in science and the world around me. Ever since I was young, my favorite pass time was to visit natural history museums or aquariums, and I found that learning about nature and the ways in which the world and humans coexist was so exciting and new. I would enjoy going on the weekends with my family and reading all of the plaques and discovering various aspects of life. My love for the natural world and society has carried on throughout my time in school and now a rising junior in high school, I have begun to discover various ways in which I can be an important addition to the progression of the human race and nature as a whole. I hope to be able to work in the field of Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering and I want to be able to make a positive impact in the world with these positions. I have since made it a point to educate myself on various aspects that come with these professions and have participated in programs that have expanded my horizons. I am currently the co-president of the Surfrider Foundation El Cerrito High School chapter and have actively been working on changing the recycling policy at El Cerrito High in order to separate trash from recycling and hopefully addressing a plastic-free campus by 2023. I am also part of a program that works with the Oakland Zoo and we work with the conservation and understanding of habitats and issues for different species and the issues that they face with endangerment. I am also someone who looks to work environmental work as it pertains to the inclusion of native culture and elevating native voices and am looking to work on a project that helps their voices be heard in a society that has continually silenced and oppressed. I also think that it is super important to address in the United States and various places the issues that the environment and climate change have affected groups of people who may not have access to resources that many others have. I would like to work on finding solutions for communities to have safety measures for issues in the environment and natural disasters that arise. Knowing that the environment is a constant cohesion between people and nature being able to address the ways in which everyone should evenly be affected with the proper resources is important, and I would like to work on affordable housing and health care to all especially in times of crisis due to environmental impact. In the future, I aspire to complete many projects and look forward to learning and being the best possible professional that I can be to spark change.

What skills have been most important to your career?
I am a very good team player and I believe that this is a very important skill when it comes to my career. Being able to work with other people from different backgrounds and ideas offers a new perspective on different problems and allows different ways to find solutions. I also would say that when working as a team, I have learned when to push back on aspects that I feel strongly about while also finding ways to compromise and listen to others. As a team player, I am able to learn patience and understanding when it comes to different situations, and it has helped me grow as a person as well as someone who is interacting with others in a professional manner.
